Wandsworth Schools Champions of London

Wandsworth have collected a prestigious city-wide sporting accolade after winning the Schools Shield at this year’s Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, finishing top of the heap among 33 London boroughs.

The award goes to the most successful borough within the schools competitions which culminated last week on 26/27 March at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace.

Around 30,0000 young Londoners began the journey to compete in the finals at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace where around 3,000 youngsters representing schools from all 33 London boroughs competed to be the champions of London.

There were 20 competitions that took place throughout March for primary and secondary schools as part of the School Games programme. Only secondary school competitions counted towards the overall standings and in the final tally, Wandsworth headed the standings with 481 points from close rivals Richmond on 465 and last year’s winners Hounslow on 452.

Leading the way for Wandsworth were Ernest Bevin and Graveney Schools who took male and female volleyball gold at the University of East London on Tuesday 19 March. They were bolstered by Ernest Bevin winning bronze in the year 7 girls’ sportshall athletics finals at Crystal Palace on Tuesday 26 March.

Nick Miller, Wandsworth’s School Games Organiser said: "We are delighted that Wandsworth have won the London Youth Games School Shield."

To come out as the top borough in the whole of London is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in school sport in Wandsworth."

He was also quick to praise the efforts of the many Wandsworth competitors who took part in the School Games.

"The young people representing the schools in the London Youth Games have performed magnificently and fully deserve the credit for winning the trophy."

However, over the past number of years, there has been a great team effort to ensure that our students receive high quality Physical Education and sporting opportunities."

It is fabulous that all this hard work has been rewarded with Wandsworth winning such a prestigious award.”
