New cycling programme for Southfields’ school

Southfields Academy have joined forces with 5 primary schools to run an exciting programme aiming to increase the number of children cycling to school. The ‘Bike-it’ programme is delivered by Sustrans in partnership with Wandsworth Council and funded by Transport for London.

Staff from Southfields, Albemarle, St Michael’s, Swaffield, Ronald Ross and St Faith’s attended a Bike-It training day delivered by Roxane Hackwood from Sustrans . On the course, staff were taught how best to teach children to carry out basic cycle maintenance, fun cycling games and even how best to teach a beginner how to ride a bike.

The schools will now work closely with Roxanne to provide a bespoke programme of cycling activities for their pupils with the aim of providing children & young people with cycling skills for life as well as increasing the number of children riding to school.

Nick Miller, Southfields Academy said, “It was a fantastic day, with everyone getting involved in the cycling activities. There were loads of good ideas to pass on to the children and we are all looking forward to raising the profile of cycling in our schools. Who knows we may even discover the next Bradley Wiggins or Laura Trott in one of our schools too.”
