Hoop Dreams for BPS & SJBC

December became a time of festive celebration for the basketball players from Battersea Park School and St John Bosco College as they progressed to the next round of the London School Games.

The inclusion of an U16 competition for both boys and girls meant that there were four Wandsworth Finals to see who would get an early Christmas present by winning the crown of Wandsworth Champions.

In the U16 Girls final, Battersea Park School took on the girls from St John Bosco College. In a very competitive game, SJBC put in a great performance, but were unable to prevent the BPS Girls from reigning their title with an emphatic 26-14 victory. This was Battersea's 5 consecutive Wandsworth title and represents a fantastic achievement.

The U14 Girls final was a repeat fixture of the older girls with a St John Bosco trying disrupt Battersea Park's domination of girls basketball in the borough. Unfortunately for them, BPS were too good on the day and ran out 32-23 winners!

However, the U14 Boys from St John Bosco were not to be denied in their final against Ernest Bevin College. It had been a great achievement by the Bevin boys in their first basketball competition, narrowly beaten 39-31.

Any basketball final between Battersea Park & Southfields Academy is always a great event, but the U16 Boys was the most exciting in years. Battersea Park went into the game as hot favourites having beaten everyone on the way to final including a thumping 55-19 victory over Southfields.

Undetered by the mantle of underdogs, Southfields started the game in the ascendency and by the end of the first quarter had established a 17 -12 lead. It soon became evident to the crowd of over 100 students that Southfields were mounting a massive challenge to become the Wandsworth Champions. At half time the teams were still level and by the end of the third quarter Southfields had a tenuous lead 1pt lead.

With the crowd getting increasing excited and the foul count on both teams rising, Battersea finally began to show the qualities that had made them the London School Games Runners up in 2013. By the final whistle, Battersea had established a unassailable lead of 73-63 and deservedly crowned Wandsworth champions. They will go now go on to represent Wandsworth in the London School Games 2014.

We would like to congratulate all our winning Wandsworth Teams on their victory and wishe them good luck in the next round of the London School Games.
