On a cold afternoon at Openview sports ground Quicksticks came to Wandsworth! The new form of Hockey is aimed at primary school children and has been designed to be played on any surface. We were lucky enough to use the astro pitch at Openview
Wix and Honeywell brought two teams each and John Burns and Belleville entered one team. In a round robin competition, the children played into the dark until we were illuminated by the floodlights.
Quicksticks certainly proved to be a quick game, with tackling a plenty, fierce shots on goal and huge clearances in defence. Although there were a couple of high scoring games, most matches involved end to end hockey with such strong defence that both teams found it difficult to score.
With team skills and tactics improving throughout the tournament it was no surprise that each team showed great team spirit and very excited substitutes on the sidelines (as well as some very enthusiast teachers and parents!)
The final results were close, with Wix A in 6th, Belleville and Wix B in joint 4th, Honeywell B in 3rd taking home bronze medals, John Burns claiming 2nd and silver medals and Honeywell A finishing first and claiming the gold medals.
Well done to all the schools that entered. The tournament was great fun to run, and from the photos you can see everyone enjoyed themselves.
Thank you for Ashcroft Academy and Spencer Hockey Club.
