On Tuesday 17th November, an enthusiastic class of Year 10 Salesian BTEC sports students, joined by the class teacher Mr Andy Lane, undertook a day-long vigorous Sports Leaders course hosted by Wandsworth School Sports Partnership team members Nick Miller and Ashley Montgomery. Sport Leaders Awards UK is a National certified course which educates students in obtaining the necessary skills and traits to be a successful leader and officiator of sports and practical activities in both a school, and also, a community setting.
The students were introduced to the concept of leadership and the qualities that coincide with being a good leader and were asked to utilise these in a range of team building games. The students were then provided with ideas, tips and basic scaffolding on how to officiate and coordinate a wide range of games and activities for Primary students.
The students were asked to practice instructing and running the activity for their fellow classmates, to allow them to see the activity in action, provide them with time to reflect, evaluate how the activity went and modify it for use with Primary students.
On a windy, wet and cold Monday afternoon, the Year 10 students of Salesian College were provided with the opportunity to demonstrate the leadership skills and qualities that they had acquired from their training with two Key Stage 1 classes from St Mary’s and Sacred Heart. The students provided a Multi-Skill circuit for the brave Year 1 students, who participated wonderfully in all the activities despite the miserable natural elements surrounding them.
The successful afternoon concluded with all the Year 1 students very tired but excited from their activities, which were demonstrated, coordinated and delivered very appropriately and professionally by the potential sports leaders.
On behalf of the Wandsworth School Sport Partnership, thank you to Salesian College for hosting the festival, well done to all the Year 10 BTEC students on the day for your excellent examples of professionalism set for the Primary students and successful activities coordinated, and thank you to all the brave Year 1 students (and their accompanying teachers) from St Mary’s and Sacred Heart schools, as without you, our leaders would not have been given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
