On Wednesday 20th January, three keen and enthusiastic Wandsworth Secondary schools journeyed to Ernest Bevin College to determine who would advance to the next round to represent the Borough at the National U14 Basketball Competition. The tournament, hosted by Wandsworth School Sports Partnership and coordinated by School Sports Coordinator Ashley Montgomery and Competition Manager Paul Williams, pitted each school against each other in a round robin format, with the top two teams playing a final.
The first match of the night saw Battersea Park come from behind and defeat Salesian College. Salesian then backed up and played Southfields, with Southfields showing fresh bodies were an advantage, taking the match quite comfortably. The final pool match had Southfields against Battersea Park. In a very close match, Battersea eventually took the game, however, due to Southfields winning earlier, the same two teams qualified for the final.
Southfields started the final very brightly and ran out to an early lead, with Battersea Park looking tired and sluggish from their win in the previous match. However, a time-out pep talk appeared to bring Battersea Park back into life and caught the Southfields team out, as they surged home to overcome the early deficit and take out the competition on the night.
On behalf of the Wandsworth School Sports Partnership, well done to Battersea Park who now advance to the All-London finals. Thank you to the staff and community at the Ernest Bevin College for allowing use to use their excellent facilities and thank you to coach Sarah for your assistance on the night and your work with these schools leading up to the competition. Finally, thank you to the staff and students of Battersea Park, Salesian College and Southfields for participating and attending the competition and well done to all the students on the night for your excellent examples of professionalism and fair play and see you all again soon at the next local competition.
