On Thursday March 11, a record high of six secondary school basketball teams ventured to Southfields Community College to compete in the Year 7 & 8 Wandsworth SSP challenge coordinated by SSCo Ashley Montgomery. The six teams, Southfields, Graveney, Salesian, Elliott and the two new entries St Cecilia’s and Ashcroft, were divided up into two pools of three, playing a round robin format with the top two of each pool to then meet in a final to determine the winner.
On completion of some highly contested pool matches, newcomers St Cecilia’s took out ‘Pool A’ undefeated, with Southfields overcoming a very close and tense final pool match against Elliott to take out ‘Pool B’, also undefeated. The final started out with a bang, with both teams coming out the blocks at one hundred miles an hour and the game flying from end-to-end. Towards the half-way mark of the game, tired legs started to kick in and Southfields appeared to be coping best, taking control of the game purely through making their points count. As the clock counted down, Southfields finished with a flurry of points to make the score 23-8 in their favour. Well done to Southfields, who won their first Wandsworth SSP basketball competition and congratulations to St Cecilia’s for making the final on their first attempt.
On Thursday 18th March, five schools attended the Year 9, 10 & 11 Basketball Competition, which was also held at Southfields Community College and co-ordinated by SSCo Ashley Montgomery. The five schools, Battersea Park, Salesian College, Graveney, Elliott and hosts Southfields played each other once in a round robin format. The major match of the tournament, which eventually determined the Competition winner, saw Battersea Park narrowly lose to Salesian College in a thrilling end-to-end match. The undefeated Salesian College took gold by finishing top of the table, second place went to Battersea Park School and bronze went to Elliott School. Congratulations to Salesian College, who have now won this competition 3 times, and will now represent the Borough of Wandsworth at the London Central Tournament held at the end of this month.
On behalf of the Wandsworth SSP, I would like to thank Southfields Community College for hosting both competitions and allowing us the use of their facilities. Finally, thank you to Basketball coach Sarah McDermott and referees on the day for ensuring the competition ran correctly and smoothly for our competitiors.
