Netball kicked off this year with a Y9/10 warm up tournament to ready the girls for the first Secondary school Netball league in Wandsworth.
5 schools entered, bringing 6 teams in total. Teams played in two groups, the first including Ashcroft, St Cecilia's Y9's and Elliott, and the second including Graveney, St Cecilia's Y10's and Southfields.
After the group stages, the top placed teams played off for first and second place, which saw St Cecilia's teams go head to head. The Y10 team showed the extra year's experience and finished first, St Cecilia's Y9's in second. Ashcroft and Southfields played for third and fourth place. With an end to end game, nothing could divide them and the game finished in a 4-4 draw, both teams being awarded joint third place. Elliott and Graveney battled for fifth and sixth place, and with Elliott a player down, Graveney took fifth.
A great turn out for the first Netball tournament of the year.
Two weeks later, six Y8 teams took to the courts. St Cecilia's rustled up two teams, Southfields, Ashcroft and two more teams from Graveney arrived to make a thrilling tournament. The standard was high until the driving rain drove us all off court. Without the full tournament being played, there are not complete results to report but the Y8 league is set to be a tough one this year.
Two days later, and the weather held out for the Y7 tournament. Ashcroft, St Cecilia's and Graveney (two teams) battled it out for what would have been the girl's first secondary school Netball tournament. Graveney's first team had obviously played Netball before and won all three of their games. All teams showed tremendous promise, and I look forward to hearing about the Y7 Netball league. St Cecilia's finished second, Graveney 2 in third and Ashcroft in fourth.
Thank you to St Cecilia's and Miss Jones for hosting the tournament.
