Finding next the Olympian?

With the 2012 Olympics coming to town next year, Wandsworth SSP were keen to spot future Olympians at the Y6 Athletics events held across the borough.

The 8th June took us to Wimbledon Park for the Wandsworth cluster event.  A year 6 class from Earlsfield, Ronald Ross, Sheringdale, Southmead and St Anne’s took part in field and track events throughout the day.  We managed to narrowly escape the rain, it starting as the presentation began.  The results were as follows: 1 = Earlsfield, 2 = Sheringdale, 3 = St Anne’s, 4 = Southmead, 5 = Ronald Ross.

A week later we returned to Wimbledon Park for the Putney and Roehampton schools.  Brandlehow, Granard, Heathmere, Roehampton Church and St Mary’s took part on another sunny day (until presentation time again, after which the heavens opened!  Another lucky escape!).  St Mary’s finished in gold medal position, Brandlehow took silver, Heathmere claimed bronze and Granard and Roehampton Church finished joint fourth!

The Tooting event was full, with 8 schools competing.  Tooting brought good weather all day, thankfully, and a very competitive track session.  The finals standings were: 1 = Ravenstone, 2 = Hillbrook, 3 = St Anselm’s, 4 = Furzedown, 5 = Fircroft, 6 = Penwortham, 7 = Chesterton, 8 = Holy Ghost.

Our final Athletics event (ever!!!) came to an abrupt end at Battersea Park, due to torrential rain.  Luckily we managed to complete the field events, and we squeezed in a couple of races.  The standings after the field events are as follows: 1 = Sir James Barrie, 2 = Honeywell & Sacred Heart, 4 = St Joseph’s, 5 = Westbridge, 6 = St Mary’s, 7 = Christchurch, 8 = Falconbrook, 9 = Chesterton.

Thank you to all staff that helped run these events, and thanks to all the schools who took part to make our last Athletics event so memorable.
