Young Leaders Award

Primary schools throughout the borough are continuing to be involved in the Young Leader Award. The YLA is a programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 9 and 13 that promotes them working with peers or younger children. Students from Years five or six develop leadership skills through a range of games and activities.

Students have developed leadership skills such as communication, organisation and motivation in order to complete the award. They have had to work with others, encouraging cooperation and teamwork with their peers.  It is a practical programme of leadership whereby the Young Leaders 'learn by doing'.

SSCO's have been busy running the YLA at a number of schools including Ravenstone, Our Lady Queen of Heaven, Granard, St Mary’s, Our Lady of Victories, Chesterton, Christchurch, Ronald Ross, Earlsfield, Sheringdale, Hillbrook, John Burns and St Anne’s.

One Primary Link Teacher said, ‘’The Young Leaders Award provides a great opportunity for children to develop their leadership skills and take responsibility for their own play. I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in the playground’’.

The Young Leader Award has many benefits. It encourages young people to take responsibility for themselves and those they are leading. Many schools are using their new young leaders to run sporting activity sessions at lunchtimes. This have proved to be very successful with schools involved seeing a reduction of behavioural problems among students.
