Wandsworth storm to Panathlon victory

Southfields Community College once again played host to the Panathlon Challenge, a fantastic national sporting event for young disabled students.  60 young disabled students showed their sporting expertise in athletics, Boccia, Kurling, Poly Bat, and table cricket to kick off the London Olympic year with a bang.

A Wandsworth team selected from students from Linden Lodge, Oak Lodge, Greenmead and Paddock put on a tremendous performance and stormed to victory, with 68 points against a strong team from Southwark. Both teams will now through to the Central London final on 21st March 2012.

The event was organised by the Panathlon Challenge Foundation and supported by an investment from the Mayor of London and the Jack Petchey Foundation. However, this year the competition was officiated by 12 sports leaders from Southfields, Graveney and Burntwood Schools. The Sports Leaders attended the Panathlon Sports Leaders course in December and did a fantastic job organising the events at the competition.

Nick Miller at Southfields said, ‘The Panathlon is a fantastic event for young disabled students and the Wandsworth squad’s wonderful performance was a great reward for lots of hard work by the team and everyone involved. It was great to see the 12 Sports Leaders playing a key role in making the event happen. They all did a really excellent job’.

‘Our next aim is to repeat this level of performance at the Central London Final in March’.
