Wandsworth schools managed a unique double at the London Youth Games Volleyball finals yesterday at the impressive University of East London Sportsdock.
The boys from Ernest Bevin and girls from Graveney both won all of there 8 matches to see off all opponents and become London Champions in a great day for Wandsworth volleyball.
In the boys event, Ernest Bevin powered their way to final with victories over schools from Barking & Dagenham, Richmond, Southwark, Harrow, Bexley & Croydon. They won the gold medal by beating Norlington Boys School of Waltham Forest by 25-10.
Team coach, Darius Setsoafia, said: “I’m really proud because no team came close to us. We kept our standard all the way through which I am very pleased about. The boys focussed and made sure that we never slacked off and we worked well as a team all day.
In the Girls tournament, Graveney School from Wandsworth won all of their matches and won the gold medal after defeating Eastbury School, who were representing Barking & Dagenham, in the final 25-14 winners.
Team coach Carlos Johnson said: “We’re very proud, the standard of volleyball was really high so we’re really happy to win gold. It was even more pleasing to see Ernest Bevin winning too. It was great that both Wandsworth teams won.“Our serve and our serve receiving was what won us this tournament. We spoke about the importance of not making errors on serve and I think we probably only made 15 serve errors across 8 games.”
Jackie Valin, Principal at Southfields Community College and Chair of the London Organising Committee for the London School Games was also on hand to present the gold medals to the two teams making it an all Wandsworth affair.
Congratulations to everyone involved it this fantastic achievement
