Young Ambassador Conference

Forty-four sports leaders from across Central London, including 8 Southfields students, attended a Young Ambassadors Conference at Southfields Academy on Monday 22nd October.

The conference was led by Darren Fitzgerald, an experienced Young Ambassador from William Ellis School in Camden and Tim Prendergast, a Paralympic Gold medallist and Athlete Mentor for the Youth Sport Trust. Darren & Tim gave inspirational speeches as part of the opening ceremony and led workshops on the day.

Young Ambassadors are outstanding sports leaders aged 14-18, who we seek to, stretch further by giving them the responsibility of being a Young Ambassador for their borough. It is a vital role creating a link between students and adults in each school to become advocates for sport & physical activity.

At the conference, the students attended three workshops that outlined the role & responsibilities of a Young Ambassador:

Increase participation in PE & Sport

Promote the positive values of sport

To be an role model advocating PE & School Sport

Tim Prendergast  said: "The key part of this programme is that young people are inspiring and leading their peers; it's a powerful message and the initiative really does demonstrate the influence they can have as role models. Young people were a central part of Lord Coe's winning bid and these Ambassadors really are leading the way and helping to deliver that lasting legacy by inspiring people in their schools and communities."

Young Ambassador, Darren said: "Being a Young Ambassador has given me so many opportunities to get involved in sport including volunteering at the 2012 School Games in the Olympic Park. The role also helped me become one of the London 2012 Torchbearers, a privilege I will never forget”. He went on to say that, “Your role as an ambassador goes beyond being a sports leader, and by the end of today you will gain the skills and knowledge to go and inspire a generation of young people in the future”.
