On 5th December, Southfields Academy hosted the Wandsworth Sporting Champions Day for young disabled students from special schools. 40 pupils from Linden Lodge, Oak Lodge, Garratt Park & Paddock Primary & Secondary Schools participated in the event organised as part of the Project Ability programme in Wandsworth
At the event, the young people had the opportunity of taking part in four specially adapted sports with a Christmas theme. These included basketball, Snowball skittles, Christmas Kurling and Boccia. They were supported by 17 Sports Leaders from Southfields Academy, who were vital to the smooth running of the event.
Tim Richmond, Head of PE at Linden Lodge, said it was “vital for children with disabilities to become more active as it keeps them fit and healthy, builds their confidence and self esteem”. He went on to say that the event “would act as a spur for the children to get involved in sport”.
Nick Miller, of the Wandsworth School Games Organiser based at Southfields said “The Sporting Champions event has become an annual event that everyone looks forward to taking part in. There’s an element of competition, but it is mainly about having fun and making new friends”.
He added that “It also act as a great opportunity to select children to represent the borough in the Central London Panathlon Challenge in March 2013”.
