Project Ability Basketball

Wandsworth School Games were delighted to host the first ever Project Ability Basketball Competition for students with a Hearing Impairement. 30 young people from 3 schools across London took part in the event at Wandle Recreation Centre. The schools taking part were Oak Lodge from Wandsworth, Elmgreen from Lambeth and Blanche Nevile in Haringey.

On arrival the players were given a coaching clinic by young sports leaders from Battersea Park School Basketball Academy. Having recieved some excellent tips, the matches commenced.

Games were played in a 4v4 format on half a basketball court with both teams shooting in the same goal. With 7 teams in total entering the competition,a round robin competition was played with the top two teams playing off in the final.

Following some fantastic basketball matches two teams from Oak Lodge reached the final with the A team victorious by a single basket.

All in all it was a great competition with all the students and leaders contributing both basketball skills and excellent sporting behaviour.

The event is part of the Central London Project Ability programme which aims to engage more young disabled pupils taking part in competitive sport. The event in Wandsorth is a Football Festival for visually and Hearing Impaired pupil and is being delivered in partnership with the Panathlon Challenge & Chelsea Football Foundation on 16th May 2013 at Southfields Academy.
