Active Wandsworth Games Force Academy

In September, Wandsworth School Games joined forces with Wandsworth Sports Development to establish a new volunteering programme in the borough. The aim of the Wandsworth Games Force Academy is to provide high quality, regular support training and development for young people committed to activity volunteering as sports leaders.

Since then over 150 young people from Wandsworth Secondary and Special Schools volunteered their support at the School Games events in Wandsworth and at the London Youth Games. The events have provided valuable experience to the students keen to develop their volunteering and leadership skills.

Students from Southfields, St Cecilia’s Burntwood, Graveney, Ashcroft, Battersea Park, Oak Lodge & Ernest Bevin have all volunteered to officiate at a wide range of sporting events. These have included; Secondary basketball, athletics and netball, primary netball, hockey, football and athletics. They have also helped out at a number of events for young disabled students including a Winter Paralympics event at Linden Lodge.

In addition to this, the Wandsworth School Games has been able to organise a number of nationally recognised courses that has enabled students have also gained qualifications to support them in their leadership activities. Seven students, (4 Southfields, 2 St Cecilia’s & 1 Chestnut Grove)passed their FA Level One Coaching Award, 10 students from Southfields & 10 from Oak Lodge completed the LYG Games Force Events Award Course and 16 Sports Leaders from Graveney passed the Tennis Leaders Award.

In February, Sharna McDermott, who had volunteered as a basketball referee for the Wandsworth School Games, won the prestigious, Young Volunteer of the Year Award at the Active Wandsworth Awards.
