On Wednesday 21st October, 8 teams from 5 Special Needs Schools in Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham gathered at the Wandle Recreation Centre in Wandsworth for a Top Sportsability Festival of Boccia. The event was run by the Wandsworth School Sports Partnership in collaboration with Wandsworth Sports Development team.
Boccia is an increasingly popular sport for both disabled adults and children. It is a target based game that demands skill and subtlety as opposed to strength or speed and is played regularly in many Special Schools.
Boccia is one of the Top Sportsability sports with clear player pathways to the Paralympic games. Therefore the Top Sportsability Festival of Boccia was a fantastic opportunity for local disabled children to utilise skills gained during school PE lessons and out of school hours boccia clubs and to take part in a tournament in a competitive sports environment against other schools. The games were refereed by sports leaders and young disabled coaches who provided great role models for the participants to identify the sporting pathways available.
The day was a great success with Greenmead School from Wandsworth crowned as overall champions after winning 5 games out of 6. Tim Richmond, Wandsworth School Sports Coordinator spoke after the event ‘the students all showed a terrific competitive spirit, showcasing their skills which have developed from more regular intra-school Boccia games and club activity. Everyone left with a medal and a smile on their faces!’
