Battersea Primary School Football League

Chelsea Football Club, in association with School Sports Co-Ordinator Ashley Montgomery from the Wandsworth School Sport Partnership at Southfields Community College, hosted a nine week league for twelve Primary Schools from Battersea and surrounding areas.

The League was divided into two ‘Groups’, and saw each team play one another twice over an eight week period.  The top four teams from each Group then advanced to play off in the finals round.

After a tough and gruelling eight weeks of League action, ‘Group A’ saw Honeywell finish on top, followed by John Burns, Chesterton and Christchurch.  Sacred Heart topped ‘Group B’, with St Mary’s, Sir James Barrie and St George’s filling the other spots.

The final week of matches started with the quarter finals, with the match of the round seeing St Mary’s advance at the expense of Chesterton on a dramatic sudden death shoot-out.  St Mary’s then met Honeywell in the first semi-final, in which Honeywell won 1-0.  The other match saw Sir James Barrie defeat Sacred Heart 3-0, to set up an intriguing final.

The final started at an intense pace, with Honeywell having the majority of the possession and chances, which culminated in the game’s first goal.  Honeywell then doubled their lead and appeared to take their foot of the pedal.  This spurred some life back into Sir James Barrie, who then had two great chances to get back into the game, but where denied by inspirational keeping from the Honeywell number one.  Although they did grab a late goal, but it proved to be just a consolation goal, as Honeywell took out the League final 2-1.  Sacred Heart defeated St Mary’s in the third and fourth play-off 2-1.

Well done to all the teams who competed in this year’s competition.  Thank you to Battersea Park School for the use of their all weather Chelsea pitches and Jedd Lloyd and the Wandsworth Leadership Academy students for referring the matches each week.
