Smashing Kwik Cricket Competitions

As a preliminary round to the ASDA Kwik Cricket Finals, Wandsworth SSP held three cluster Kwik cricket competitions around the borough to select the top teams for the finals day.

Battersea cluster started in style with accurate bowling and outstanding fielding on display.  Brandlehow, Honeywell, John Burns and St George’s completed in a round robin format, with the top two placed teams progressing to the final.  With 3 out of 3 wins, Brandlehow topped the table and Honeywell finished in second.  All players were a credit to their school and showed a great enthusiasm for cricket.

The Putney/Roehampton cluster was up next and on all accounts this was a fierce tournament.  With six teams (Our Lady of Victories, St Mary’s, All Saints, St Faith’s and two teams from Sacred Heart), the competition was played in two groups.  Again with some accurate bowling and strong batting, the cricket was of a high standard.  All Saints and Our Lady of Victories topped their groups and progress to the finals.  St Mary’s and Sacred Heart A finished second in their groups, and St Faith’s and Sacred Heart B finished third.

Tooting cluster played their competition in true English cricketing style; overcast, cold and of course rain!  The weather certainly didn’t hold back any of the four teams (Franciscan, Hillbrook, Penwortham and Sellincourt).  Smashing definitely described the batting that day with a total of 76 boundaries being hit over three games on just one pitch!  After some very close matches, Hillbrook went through unbeaten and Sellincourt also progress to the final in second place.  A special mention must go to Penwortham and Franciscan, who in the final game showed inspiring sportsmanship.  Harry from Penwortham played for Franciscan as they were a player down, both teams were congratulating good play on and off the pitch, and the standard of cricket was a testament to their determination and passion.

The Wandsworth ASDA Kwik cricket final (best team) was held at Spencer Cricket Club on 17th June.  All Saints, Sellincourt and Brandlehow competed in one group, and Our Lady of Victories, Hillbrook, Honeywell and St Mary's competed in the second group.  Both groups fought hard and showed exectly why they had made the finals with excellent cricketing skills.

All Saints topped their group with Sellincourt in second and Brandlehow finished third.  Honeywell topped their group after a thrilling game against Hillbrook to decide first and second place.  Hillbrook took second, St Mary's finished third and Our Lady of Victories in fourth.  An All Saints, Honeywell final was to decide which team would progress to the Surrey finals.  A steady run rate gave All Saints a good total after 5 overs, but Honeywell slowed their scoring with some tight bowling, taking 2 crucial wickets in the 7th over.  All Saints replied with a good start in the field taking an early wicket but some power hitting in the middle overs made it more confortable for Honeywell.  Although All Saints took two late wickets, Honeywell secured a win by 17 runs and their place in th Surrey final.

The Wandsworth ASDA Girls Kwik Cricket final took place the following day, also at Spencer CC.  Five teams (Brandlehow, Honeywell, Sacred Heart, St Mary's (Putney), Hillbrook) competed in one league, all playing each other.  The girls showed considerable improvement throughout the tournament, particularly in their bowling skills, which meant the last few games were very close.  Having scored consistently with the bat, and only losing 4 wickets across all games, St Mary's were clear winners, Brandlehow and Honeywell came in joint second, and Sacred Heart and Hillbrook joint fourth.

Thank you to Surrey Cricket for umpiring and leading the days at Spencer CC, and to the SSCo team for running their cluster competitions.
