Southfields Basketball Bash

Southfields Community College hosted the final Wandsworth School Sports Secondary Basketball Competition for the year, which saw three teams of Year 9, 10 and 11 students battle it out for the prestigious award.  Battersea Park, Salesian College and hosts Southfields made up the list of strong contenders, playing a ‘round-robin format’ league to determine the overall champions for 2010.

The competition started with a bang, with Southfields facing a determined Battersea Park. The game was end-to-end, with both teams taking advantage of their attacking chances and putting points on the board.  Just before the half-time buzzer, Battersea started to pull away, piling on the points to go into the break with a clear margin.  A stern talk from ‘Coach’ Mr Mensah appeared to rejuvenate the Southfields boys, who came out a stronger team early in the second half.  Although closing the gap, Southfields could not keep up their lightning pace and Battersea crept back into the match and took the game 34-20.

The second match saw Battersea Park back up and face under-strength Salesian College.  The fresh Salesian boys started the game better, but it didn’t take long for Battersea to find their rhythm and they began to run away with the game before half-time.  The second half saw much of the same from Battersea, who turned on some class and easily took the match 26-8 and in doing so, also won the gold medal on the day.

The final match of the competition was the battle for silver and bronze.  Salesian again started well, nailing some long range shots to take a handy early lead.  Southfields, spurred on by some vociferous supporters, got right back in the match and eventually ran away with the match 22-12, taking the silver medal and leaving Salesian with the bronze medals.

On behalf on the Wandsworth School Sports Partnership, we would like to thank Southfields Community College for hosting the event, Coach Sarah McDermott for all her amazing work and efforts throughout the year with all the schools and finally all the students who attended, not only this competition, but all the Basketball competitions throughout the year.  Congratulations and see you next season.
