Earlsfield Primary School capped an amazing month of tennis by being crowned London Mini-Tennis Red Champions last week at the National Tennis Centre, Roehampton.
The team of budding Andy Murrays and Serena Williams’ have fought their way through three rounds of high-level competition over the past month.
The Mini-Tennis Red competition is part of the London Mini-Games pathway so the team also represented Wandsworth earning points towards the borough’s Balfour Beatty London Youth Games total. The event was a culmination of a capital-wide competition which gives a unique regional competition opportunity to over 2,000 year 3 and 4 Londoners, involving 300 London schools. Thursday’s final featured the top two teams from five separate qualifying rounds which have taken place in recent weeks throughout London; Earlsfield qualifying firstly through winning the the Wandsworth Mini-Tennis Championships and then the Central London Finals.
The London Final is delivered through a unique partnership between the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, the Youth Sport Trust (YST) Competition Manager programme, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Tennis Foundation.
Earlsfield defeated Fox Primary of Kensington and Chelsea 6-2 in the final – the same team they defeated in the finals of the Central London Finals.
Wandsworth’s Team Manager Ashley O’Connor said: “They showed supreme character and were centred on winning. We’ve got a nice scheme at the school. At our school, we teach them the foundations of tennis and take it from there.” "A lot of them also have a lot of tennis activity outside school and that has a lot to do with their success. A lot of them are going to carry on with their tennis. I’d be surprised if I didn’t see some of them on telly in ten years or more time.”
Paul Williams, Senior Competition Manager for Central London said: “To be crowned London Champions in any sport is a phenomenal achievement and the Earlsfield team have, over the three competitions, played some fantastic tennis. Well done Earlsfield!”
