VOLLEYBALL GOLD & SILVER FOR WANDSWORTH
Wandsworth schools continued their remarkable run of success at London School Games Volleyball finals at UEL Sportsdock on Friday 4th March.
This time, it was the girls from Putney High School who struck gold, with an amazing performance that saw them arrive at the Semi finals with six straight victories. In the semi, they produced some inspired volleyball to defeat Central Foundation, the pre-tournament favourites from Tower Hamlets in a close game. In the final, they continued the excellent from to convincingly beat their opponents, Sacred Heart from Harrow.
Ernest Bevin College, were going for an amazing 5th consecutive London title and produced a string of performaces that showed their quality throughout the day. By the time they had comfortably beaten Elm Green from Lambeth in the semi-final, it seemed destined that they would retain their title again. However, in final they faced Orleans Park from Richmond, who were determined not to be there just to make up the numbers.
Following a tense game littered with unforced errors and some sublime volleyball, the final whistle blew with the scores to close to call. The scorer confirmed that Orleans Park had sprung a major surprise winning the final by 18-17.
Despite, their disappointment, the boys from Ernest Bevin had played some fantastic volleyball and are sure to return next year even more determined to win back their title.
Overall, it was a fantastic day for volleyball in Wandsworth with all the umpires and officials on the day made up from sports leaders from Graveney and Ernest Bevin.
Well done to everyone involved!
