The annual Wandsworth Year 5/6 primary Tag Rugby Festival took place on Friday 23rd November at Ashcroft Academy's sports ground. Twenty local primary schools entered the festival, with 28 teams and over 230 youngsters participating in the Rugby League version of the game.
This year we ran two competitions on the same day an (A) Competition for Established teams and a (B) for Emerging level teams. Schools were able to select the competition to suit their experience and ability level.
With 17 teams entering the A competition and 11 in the B, there was plenty of very great Tag Rugby played in the morning round robin stages. In the afternoon teams were able to play further matches with schools at their own level with maximum participation.
In the Established final, Sheringdale won a very close match against Belleville A and now go on to represent Wandsworth in the London School Games final in March. Penwortham also beat Belleville's B team in the Emerging final.
However, the day will be remember for all the fantastic sporting values shown by everyone at the event and it was a tough call to see who deserved to win the Respect The Games certificates. In the end Broadwater & Sacred Heart Battersea gained the msot nomintaions for showing Respect. Hotham won the the referees vote and St Anselms won a special award for showing great determination and win their final match of the day.
A big thank to the referees from Try Tag Rugby and to the Primary Sports Co-ordinators for seeing the benefit in bringing their pupils to play in these festivals.
