Netball tournaments go hot & cold!

From the freezing conditions on 9 March to glorious sunshine the following week, Netball moved forward into the Spring Term.  Burntwood once again hosted all three after-school tournaments.

Paul Williams, Senior Competition Manager took control of the Y7 tournament, organising Ashcroft, Graveney, Southfields and St Cecilia’s in a round robin tournament.  In arctic conditions, described slightly differently by Mr Williams, the girls played each other gaining 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and none for a loss.

Graveney were on fire with goals being scored frequently in each game, and a solid defence saw them with a clean sheet in goals against.  Having won all three of their games, they claimed first place.  St Cecilia’s finished second with two wins, Ashcroft came in third, and Southfields finished fourth.

The Y8 competition was welcomed by players and teachers as it was blessed with sunshine.  St Cecilia’s, Ashcroft and Southfields once again battled it out.  An end to end game between St Cecilia’s and Ashcroft got the ball rolling, both teams finding it difficult to score at first.  A steady see-saw of goals meant it finished a 3-3 draw.

Enter Southfields!  Unfortunately Southfields were still waking up in their first game, and St Cecilia’s took full advantage, scoring 8 goals in the match, with no reply from Southfields.  After some motivating words from their teacher, Southfields meant business in their match against Ashcroft.  Ashcroft were there for battle though, and another frantic end to end match saw Southfields clinch a 6-5 win.  St Cecilia’s took gold, Southfields picking up silver, and Ashcroft were disappointed to have to accept bronze.  I think they’ll come back with fire in their bellies next time!

Our final tournament of the term saw Y9/10 teams from St Cecilia’s, Ashcroft, Southfields and Burntwood take to the court on another sunny day!  Ashcroft were clearly there to stamp their authority on this age group and started with a 7-1 win over St Cecilia’s, whilst Burntwood beat a disorganised Southfields with a 6-3 win.  Burntwood were unable to convert many goals, although being equal in possession with Ashcroft in their second game.  Southfields turned it around against St Cecilia’s winning 4-1.  The final round of matches saw Ashcroft get their third win against Southfields, and Burntwood score 7 past St Cecilia’s with no reply.

The Y9/10 teams were a feisty bunch, and kept the umpires on their toes!  An unbeaten Ashcroft took first place overall, with a surprised Burntwood team finishing second.  Southfields finished third and St Cecilia’s fourth.  Another successful tournament, with lots of support from parents and teachers.

Thank you to Burntwood School for hosting this term’s netball tournaments, to the teachers who umpired, and the School Sport Partnership for their support and organisation.
